Turner and Paris' Six C's of Motivation provide a comprehensive framework for understanding and fostering motivation in students and it has been the backbone of my teaching since day dot.
My Top Tips and Ideas for Implementation
Choice
Choice boards
Give students the choice as to whether they can write, type or orally record their work
Let students select what they are writing about within the studied genre. Allow their own interests to shine through.
Challenge
Tiered activities that follow a Solo Taxonomy model and/or Blooms Taxonomy model.
Ask students to apply their learning in a real-world scenario.
Ask students what they are least confident with or fear the most but wish they didn't, and encourage them to do things that are out of their comfort zone.
Control
Setting classroom rules or coming up with classroom/ school rewards.
Give students control over the pace of learning. You may allow students who understand the concept through your assessment for learning, to get to work quicker than others if they want to and 'drop in' to your teaching as they wish.
Ask students when they would prefer to have particular subjects on the timetable each day.
Collaboration
Group work and partner work.
Apply the 'jigsaw' learning approach to project-based learning.
Work with other classes, schools and the wider community.
Constructing Meaning
Let the children know what the real-world links are in every lesson and encourage them to think of other ways the skill/ concept is needed in the world.
Turn the learning objective into an inquiry question to encourage a task focused approach to lessons to answer the question. For example, instead of 'LO: To learn number bonds within 10' it may be 'Are there more than 2 number bonds for each number within 10?'.
Use project-based learning that mirrors real-world situations, for example, solving community problems, to give lessons deeper meaning and relevance.
Consequence
Feedback on work on how it can be improved.
Presenting work to peers, other classes or the wider community. You may decide as a result of a project, to write a letter as a call for action to the principal, the government or even a celebrity!
Have a culminating goal to the theme of learning where all of the learning is showcased.
